5 Things To Do in Akron OH You Shouldn’t Miss

Thinking about moving to Akron? Or maybe you’re already unpacking boxes and wondering what to check out first.

Either way, we get it—relocating comes with a mix of excitement and “okay, now what?” moments. At Cardinal Moving, we’ve helped plenty of folks get settled in Akron, and one thing we always hear is how surprised people are by what this city has to offer.

So whether you’re brand new to the area or just scoping it out before the big move, here are five must-do activities in Akron you’ll definitely want to put on your list.

1. Visit the Akron Zoo

You don’t have to be a kid to love the zoo. The Akron Zoo is small enough to see in an afternoon but packed with enough exhibits to keep things interesting—especially the grizzly bears, penguins, and Komodo dragons.

If you’re moving to the area with family, this spot is a guaranteed hit for a weekend outing. Bonus: it’s open year-round, and there are cool seasonal events like Brew at the Zoo for adults or ZooLights during the holidays.

And yep—we’ve moved quite a few animal lovers who said this was one of the first places they explored after settling in.

2. Hike or Bike the Towpath Trail

If fresh air and green space are more your thing, you’ve got to hit the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. It runs right through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which is only about 20 minutes outside the city.

You can walk, jog, or ride miles of scenic trail that wind past forests, rivers, and even the occasional waterfall. It’s a great way to unwind and see what northeast Ohio’s natural side has to offer.

Plenty of the families we move to the area tell us this becomes part of their weekend routine—it’s that relaxing.

3. Explore the Akron Art Museum

Modern art meets industrial vibes at the Akron Art Museum, right in downtown. Even if you’re not a big “art person,” the building alone is worth checking out. Inside, you’ll find rotating exhibits, creative programming for all ages, and a permanent collection that’s surprisingly edgy for a smaller city.

If you’re moving from a bigger metro area and worried you’ll miss culture and creativity, this place might just change your mind.

At Cardinal Moving, we always recommend this to anyone new in town who’s looking for something different to do on a Saturday afternoon.

4. Tour Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

History buffs, this one’s for you. Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is a 65-room mansion built back in the early 1900s by one of the co-founders of Goodyear Tire. It’s one of the largest historic homes in the country that’s open to the public, and it’s gorgeous inside and out.

Even if you’re not into old houses, the gardens alone are worth wandering through. They also do seasonal events like Deck the Hall during the holidays—think twinkling lights, music, hot cocoa, and all the festive vibes.

This is one of those local gems that feels like a mini escape from the day-to-day chaos of moving boxes and checklists.

5. Catch a Game at Canal Park

Nothing says “Welcome to Akron” like a summer night at Canal Park, home of the Akron RubberDucks. It’s a minor league baseball stadium right downtown, and it’s got a laid-back, fun vibe perfect for families or just a casual night out.

Grab a hot dog, enjoy the fireworks, and soak up some small-town baseball charm. It’s affordable, it’s fun, and it’s one of those places that really makes you feel part of the community.

We’ve had plenty of customers say their first real “this feels like home” moment happened right here, surrounded by cheering fans and classic stadium snacks.

Akron’s got a little bit of everything—outdoorsy trails, cool museums, history, art, and family-friendly fun. Whether you’re brand new to the city or thinking about making the move, these spots are a great way to get to know your new hometown.
